22 Vertigo’s Zone

Vertigo’s Zone

His friend’s call him Scottie
Retired from the force
An ord’nary Joe
Who lets life take its course
He saw a man die
Whom he could not save
Now when he looks down
The ground gives away

He takes an assignment
to follow a blonde
Who thinks she’s possessed
by a ghost from beyond
She stands by a grave
She circles around
Right down to the bay
Where she’s almost drowned

Wandering, wandering over the town
Stalking the beauty who wore a black gown
Seeking an answer to riddles unknown
Falling and falling in Vertigo’s zone

He thinks he is Orpheus
king of the lyre
For he saved his lady
From funeral pyre
He is her knight
Her guiding star
And she will be safe
If he rides in her car

But he cannot save her
Possessed by the dead
She climbs up the tower
Where he cannot tread
She casts herself down
He gasps in despair
He’s left with a wound
That no man can bear

Wandering, wandering over the town
Stalking the beauty who wore a black gown
Seeking an answer to riddles unknown
Falling and falling in Vertigo’s zone

Many months later
He sees on the street
A woman like Maddie
Though quite indiscreet
He feels compelled
To give her some gloss
And mold her into
The woman he lost

Yet just at the moment
The past is reborn
And they have made love
Time’s ribbon is torn
Her necklace reveals
It’s all been contrived
Since Maddie is Judy
She was never alive

Wandering, wandering over the town
Stalking the beauty who wore a black gown
Seeking an answer to riddles unknown
Falling and falling in Vertigo’s zone

The cruelest of fates
For a man in love lost
He had been tricked
By a devilish plot
So he dragged her back
To where time had stopped
To the top of the tower
Where the body had dropped

How could she do this
He’d wanted her so
Love me she pleaded
Now they both know
But it was too late
She fell from the blow
And he lost her for good
Twice in a row

Wandering, wandering over the town
Stalking the beauty who wore a black gown
Seeking an answer to riddles unknown
Falling and falling in Vertigo’s zone
